Introduction to the Construction of Harmonic Maps
Sala B3-01

John C. Wood (University of Leeds - Invited Professor of FCUL - Gulbenkian professorship)

Abstract:

This is the second seminar in the series. We will continue to examine the loop group methods of Dorfmeister and Eschenburg, seeing how pluriharmonic maps into a symmetric space are given by holomorphic data, in particular, by the meromorphic potential of Dorfmeister, Pedit and Wu. We will see how the standard twistor theory for isotropic maps is naturally embedded in this general theory. The definitions and elementary examples of harmonic maps given in the first seminar will not be repeated; however, a summary of the story so far of the `twistor lift' into a loop group will be given, so if you missed the first seminar, you should still be able to understand this one.
