HIV, virulence and transmission

Abstract:

The dynamics of HIV transmission can be divided in three modes:
transmission by infected persons under the acute phase, in the asymptomatic phase or entering the AIDS phase. The quantification of new infections by each of these modes is crucial to allocate resources to better fight the epidemic; nevertheless, there is no consensus in the quantitative relevance of each of these modes. The relationship between transmission and virulence is vital to this quantification and although there is still much uncertainty in that, it is already possible to make some predictions based in quantitative scenarios. I will show some possible outcomes, based in a simple population model, and will discuss the possible evolution of the former relationship.
